My Radio Story

At 14 years old, I was already hooked.

I’d sit and watch my dad, Larry "The Eagle" Edwards, in the live broadcast and production studios, laying down commercials and running the board like a pro. Not long after, around 14 and a half, the station started slipping bits of my voice into commercials and promos. That was it—I knew right then I wanted to be a radio announcer… rocking the mic.

Then came the summer of 1995.

My dad was the morning show host and program director at CKON Radio, 97.3 FM. One afternoon, we were cruising down the road in his ’78 Cadillac when his giant flip phone rang. It was the station—the overnight DJ couldn’t make it.

He looked over at me and asked, “How would you feel about going live tonight?”

I was nervous—but I said yes.

I’d spent years watching him work at CKON and even CJSS back in the ’80s, so I knew the basics. Still, as the night got closer, the nerves really kicked in. I tried to sleep before the shift—but there was no chance.

By 11 PM, we were on our way to the station.

Once the other DJ signed off, I rolled into my first break—played some commercials, cued up my first song, and then… I keyed the mic. Hands shaking, heart racing, I introduced myself:

“Joey ‘The JR Eagle’ Edwards…”

Not long after, I got my first request—from a regular listener named Larry “The Shark.” A great guy, and someone who later became a good friend.

As the night went on, something clicked. The nerves faded, the rhythm took over, and I realized—this is exactly what I was meant to do.

Then in 1996, something else stuck for good.

My uncle Gary suggested to my dad, “You should start calling him Joey the Hawk.”

From that moment on, the name took off—and it became who I was on the air:

Joey “The Hawk” Edwards… on 97.3 FM CKON.

I stayed with CKON for over 17 years.

Later on, life pulled me in different directions. I worked at The Wonderland Club and Body Shop until 2012, but radio never really left me. I started an online station and reconnected with some of my old listeners. It was going great—until life got busy again and I had to step away.

From there, I moved into working as an e-bike technician, and by 2015, I had opened my own shop.

But radio?

That’s my first love.

Now it’s 2026, and I’m back at it—bringing Hawk-Radio.net back on the air. These days, I host a weekly show called Full Throttle Electric Lunch.

And honestly?

That’s how I live life too—just like driving my Camaro SS…

Full throttle.
